'We Move Lightly': Song #1 from the Boundless soundtrack
To kick off 12 days of songs from BOUNDLESS, my newly published memoir, I offer you a song that dances like sunlight on the water.
BOUNDLESS is a story about the beauty and fragility of life. It opens with my twin babies in my arms, teetering at the edge of consciousness. We are in an ambulance urgently sailing down Interstate 25 to the emergency room.
This song, “We Move Lightly,” by Dustin O’Halloran, captures holding the twins to my heart and feeling the chill of death so near, too near, to us.
And: This song dances like sunlight on the water.
Because however long we have to be here—however long we are here to catch a breath, however long to flutter our eyelids and awaken to the sun, however long we are here to feel the breath of life on our skin as we glide down an open road—that is what to see here. It is the why.
Those moments in the ambulance when the three of us were held in that liminal space between death and life are extended moments, the kind that even decades later, you are still always living, the kind that becomes your new heartbeat. Those moments are suspended over the rest of the story of my life.
And theirs -- spoiler alert! The twins don’t die in the first chapter. Instead, for all of us, it will be the slow death, the one most of us know, the one where you know what’s coming, you just don’t know when.
Once you know this, you have better, clearer choices about how you will live. Be present. Love more. Feel it all. All the time. Dance lightly.
EXCERPT FROM BOUNDLESS
Yes, they are alive. This is when I understand.
It was true they did not die. Another truth has come alongside to
live next to this: From here on, it will only be the slow death.
BOUNDLESS has a soundtrack!
In honor of the December 21, 2024, release date, I give you 12 days of songs that tell the story of Living Boundlessly.
Music runs all through the story because I passed on my great musical inheritance to the twins. (And probably the wordsmithing inheritance, too… Grace wrote a play in middle school, and Paul wrote a sci-fi novel in fifth grade.)
Boundless is available!
